so i got to meet Missa from Thrift Candy over my vacation. Missa lives near my in laws, and we had tried, and unfortunately failed, to meet up last year when i came down for the belly dance festival. this year we managed to find the time to meet up and have coffee, and Missa showed me some of the shops in the old town area of her city.

taking picures of outfits at my in laws house proved to be really difficult. but i did what i could.
this is the last picture ever taken of me wearing my Lost Boys & Lovers earrings that Sadie gave me. tragically, i lost one of them on the windy streets of Santa Rosa.
but i'll get to that in a minute.
RIP feather earrings.

you'll notice the carefully placed air mattress in this next picture. just adding a bit of ambience, if you will.

100% thrifted except shoes, a gift from my sister, and purse, a gift from Milla
so Missa and i met up at a coffee shop in an area of Santa Rosa that had a lot of old buildings, and the hollowed out shell of a rail road station, or something. it was this awesome brick structure, almost like a movie set. Missa told me that they were planning to rebuild it. i love trains. there are no trains where i live. none. isn't that weird? where i grew up, there were a ton of trains. i saw multiple trains every day. my grandparents backyard had a train track right behind it, so all night i could hear the trains roaring by. there was a train track across the highway from my house growing up, too. i really miss hearing the sound of a train going by. but i digress.

Missa is so pretty! and so sweet, just like her online persona. we had some coffee and got to know eachother and she listened to me whine about losing my earring. i had gone to the wrong coffee shop, originally, and then got a bit lost trying to find the one Missa had instructed me to meet her at. i ended up walking the wrong direction and after a few blocks, i noticed that things were looking decidely less friendly. i noticed a man across the street and started to ask him for directions, but as i got closer i realized that he wasn't really in his right mind, for whatever reason, so i kept going. i really need to get glasses, i can't see shit from far away. finally i met someone who wasn't talking to themselves and asked which way i should go. turns out, the other way. so back i went. silly me. i had really bad allergies, too, for some reason and tears were streaming out of eyes. i was stoked to meet Missa and be late and appearing to be in tears. way to make a first impression, right? luckily i found the coffee shop and managed to rein in the watering eyes just a bit and all was well. after we had coffee, Missa took me on a stroll to some thrift shops and an amazing antique warehouse, where i met this guy.

i couldn't resist.
the warehouse was full of endless treasures. i could probably have stayed there for a few weeks. so many wonderful old photographs and random nick nacks.
and meanwhile, mermaid haired Missa and i took pictures of each other while noting how awkward it can be to do so. look at that hair!

i was so pleased that i was able to find that lovely woven purse in a thrift shop. when i saw it in the thrift shop Missa took me too, i snatched it up right away because it was so awesome. as i wandered around the store, i started thinking how i already had a purse just like it. Missa has long lamented over my purse, a gift from Milla, so i thought to myself, "if she comments on the purse, i'll give it to her." a few minutes later, she noticed the purse and said, "did you find that here?" to which i said, "yup, do you want it?" and handed it to her. shopping with friends is so fun like that. i bet that purse is really stoked it got to go home with Missa, because she was heading to Mexico the next day, and i bet that purse got to come along. the purse would have been disappointed to have to come home to gray, rainy humboldt county. our last stop was a vintage shop, full of tons of dresses and hats and random what nots. we perused to mexican peasant blouses and the gunne sax rack and made the proprietress take our picture on last time before we parted ways with plans to try and meet up again sometime in the future, hopefully with Heather and Amber in tow...and maybe a road trip to Sacramento to browse Nicole's amazing shop. here's to hoping that happens!

it was so nice to meet someone as sweet and gracious as Missa. i look forward to seeing her again, hopefully sooner than next year!

okay that shop looks amazing, i LOVE that last pic of you and missa and it does my heart a heap of good to see you two together. makes me miss missa, and even miss you tho we've never met in real life! sorry i didn't get down there to visit this time. i agree, let's make it happen and before next year!
ReplyDeleteI had no idea Missa's hair was so long! I lament cutting mine, but it had to be done. (boohoo) Glad you got to meet up. I am hoping and persuading and whining to my hubs about coming over to the States nxt year on a short holiday - we already have an overseas trip planned...i just want to add in this one destination. send goodluck vibes my way 'kay?!
ReplyDeleteYay, I finally got my post up too!
ReplyDeleteFirstly, I must say that I greatly admire your mad title-ing skilz. Secondly, upon reading this I have realized that walking a couple blocks in the wrong direction would have put you right in front of the soup kitchen, which explains a lot. Thirdly, here i was thinking those were tears of joy for finally getting to meet me in person ;)
Seriously though Brigit, what a joy it was to meet you and thanks so much again for finding me a new woven bag, you rock, and yes, let's make that trip to Sac happen!
I've been catching up on your posts, wish I had time to comment on them all, there have been so many awesome ones!
Heather: Your comment makes me miss you :)
Teeny: I had no idea my hair was that long either! I think it might be time for a little trim. Crossing my fingers and toes for you making it over here, that would be AWESOME!
