cirque

old school circus photos are pretty much the coolest pictures ever. i spent some time yesterday looking through what the magical interwebz has to offer in terms of photographic evidence of this period of times circus folk. fortune tellers, cooch dancers, acrobats, clowns, lion tamers, contortionists, "freaks" and roustabouts. colorful folk under a colorful tent putting on quite a show. as i mentioned a few days ago, while i am completely entranced and fascinated by the romanticized image of a circus, especially a circus set in the early 1900's, i boycott any circus with animals in my real life. i prefer the fantasy of these pictures to the reality of the animal cruelty that many circus animals suffer. so while you won't catch me at a circus any time soon, i still find so much inspiration in these faded old pictures and the characters that live, frozen in time, within them. i hope you enjoy them, too!

i actually am an honorary member of the Humboldt State University Circus Club. back in 2004 or so, i danced in an adult circus show called The Last Temptation of Dr. Sugarshaker. Lady Kali, i believe, was the name i was given. after the final nights performance, all of us gathered in the changing room to celebrate a good run, and the circus kids put me through their "hazing" ritual, which consisted of telling a deep dark secret or giving a lap dance. i chose the secret. anyway, after that i was told i was a "Circus Freak Fo' Life". man, those were fun times.

  1. Um...Brigit, that was rad. You are a circus freak, sweet! I am intimidated and scared by anything grotesque, which is that fine line that the circus walks. I have always, ALWAYS wanted to be a gypsy fortune teller. I made money in middle and high school doing tarot cards, interpreting dreams and reading palms. My teachers called me Madame Zorba.

I say we start an animal free circus. You, Lady Kali and I Madame Zorba will pick up some contortionists (with a little practice I could be good at that again- I used to be able to sit on my head and all those weirdo party tricks) as well as bearded ladies, strong men and little people.

Ever seen "Freaks"? It's really old, black and white about circus people. Only, it's fucking scaaaaary. I think that may have something to do with my aversion to the old timey circus.

    This post was awesome,

  2. Hi! Loving your blog btw, although this is my first comment. I love this post and these glorious pics! One of my favorite movies as a kid was Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken... it had all the same great elements of 1920s bobs, horses, and Buffalo Bill Cody that a nerdy kid who thought history was cool could want. It's really neat that you were actually part of a real life circus group.

PS: Don't be weirded out that I've added you to my blog roll... its my lifeline to checking in on cool blogs!

  3. Hello,
You NEED to read "Water for Elephants"!!! All the pictures above are what formed in my mind while reading that book 3 years ago.

It is now a movie coming out next Friday, but READ the book first! It's amazing and seeing as how you love circuses, you should devour it. :)

  4. Back to the circus and the side-show already? Girl you know your stuff. These images are awesome. When I was a kid, they still had kind of creepy, old-fashioned circuses from the Soviet coming to Finland and some were sad and some were scary, but there were definitely sideshow performances and fortune tellers who were real Romane and exotic animals.
